Galloway has a great tradition
as Scotland's leading area for the production of cheese,
stretching back even beyond 1899, the year in which the
first modern creamery was built on the Stranraer site.
Initially an independent company,
the creamery became part of the Scottish Milk Marketing
Board in the 1930s. Sixty years later, when the Board was
disbanded, The Caledonian Cheese Company became an integral
part of the McLelland Group, Britain's third largest cheese
company. Major investment in the 1990s has turned the creamery
into one of the most modern and productive in Europe.
